David Gring was named Valparaiso University’s head men’s golf coach in June, 2011. The 2013 Horizon League Coach of the Year, he enters his third season at the helm of the Crusader program in 2013-2014.
Gring guided the Crusaders to their first Horizon League Championship in 2013, in just the fourth season since the program’s revival. With the league title, Valpo appeared in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history, competing in the Columbus Regional. The win at the league tournament was one of three for the Crusaders in 2012-2013, as the Brown and Gold also took top team honors at the Purdue Midwest Shootout and the Bradley Invitational.
Individually, Gring saw Thomas Wettstein earn individual medalist honors at the league tournament, while Kyle Henning won the John Dallio Memorial and also earned Horizon League Golfer of the Week honors after a third-place finish at Western Illinois in the spring. Austin Gaugert also became the first Crusader to shoot under par for a 54-hole tournament.
Gring played golf for the Crusaders from 1985-1988 where he was a two-time team Most Valuable Player. He earned All-Heartland Conference honors in 1985 before receiving All-AMCU accolades in 1987.
