David Gring was named Valparaiso University’s head men’s golf coach in June, 2011.
During Gring’s first season at the helm of the Crusader program, Valpo earned four finishes in the top half of tournament fields, up from just one top-half finish the previous year. In addition, the Crusaders averaged 301.9 per round as a team, nearly three strokes improved from the prior season.
In his first season, Gring saw Kyle Henning earn HL Golfer of the Week honors. Also successes in the classroom, Brad Winters was named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon Division I All-America Scholar, while Henning was an Academic All-League selection and the team earned All-Academic Team honors from the GCAA. The Crusaders were one of just 11 programs to earn President’s Special Recognition status, with a cumulative team GPA of at least 3.50.
Gring played golf for the Crusaders from 1985-1988 where he was a two-time team Most Valuable Player. He earned All-Heartland Conference honors in 1985 before receiving All-AMCU accolades in 1987.
